Wainwright’s Yard is located just off the main shopping high street in Kendal, accessible through a double entrance passageway. This positioning makes it challenging for visitors to notice the food, drink, and retail offerings, which negatively impacts potential foot traffic and customer engagement. The front entrance had become outdated, cluttered, and uninviting.
We designed a series of colourful frames that house digital screens to promote Wainwright’s Yard, its tenants, and local community events. The scheme also includes an artificial living wall and various information graphics.
New slate paving has been introduced, along with programmable coloured LED lighting and LED downlighters, which illuminate the passageways. A prominent front entrance sign features a light beacon to attract attention, while new seating encourages visitors to linger and spend more time in the yard.
The digital screens and lighting are remotely managed, allowing for regular updates to content based on the season. The lighting can be programmed to display different colours and sequences, making it perfect for aligning with Christmas lights and other seasonal events throughout the year.

“K-nekt immediately understood the brief and came up with a solution that included new branding, signage, lighting, paving, and colourful frames with plants, signage and digital screens. The screens can be regularly updated with information to promote the yard, the retailers and wider community events. It all works very well and catches people attention from the high street, drawing them through two narrow, conjoined historic tunnels.”
